Her biological son, meanwhile, had confessed to the brutal murder of William Hood — even telling investigators that he had thrown the body parts into nearby creeks because his stepfather had "always wanted to be buried at sea." At the time, police said that they knew his mother had been with her son during some trips to dispose of the grisly remains.

"Whether she was present during the killing, I do not know," said District Attorney Hallie Dixon during the initial investigation. Carolyn's attorney, Jeremiah Giles, now says: “My client is very elderly — and, basically, an invalid, and can’t get out of her wheelchair.” She was returned to a nursing home after her arrest, while her son's murder trial begins in December.
