The suicide bomber
who murdered 14 people in a St. Petersburg subway had come to the country as a sushi chef! Akbarzhon Jalilov, 22, was born in the mostly-Muslim country of Kyrgyzstan, which is considered to be an ally to Russia. Parts of his body were found scattered among the carnage created by the nail bomb that he set off in Russia's second-largest city — detonated on a day that
President Vladimir Putin was visiting!
A spokesperson for Russia's equivalent of the Secret Service confirmed Jalilov's identity, and said authorities believe that he had "acquired Russian nationality." The maniac was caught on surveillance video outside and inside the subway station — along with footage of him placing a second deadly device at another subway station.
This larger device, armed with over two pounds of TNT, thankfully failed to explode. Jalilov was seen clenching his fists while walking, with experts believing that he was clutching the detonators in his hands.
A former friend of Jalilov said that the bomber had previously been working as a sushi chef, and noted that the Muslim didn't seem particularly religious — and was "not even saying his prayers" regularly during the workday.
The bomber injured over 50 people, and doctors warned that his body count may not be complete. Jalilov was only identified after authorities first looked into the identity of a decapitated victim, with the man's injuries severe enough to suggest that he had been carrying the bomb.
