Two employees at a drug-rehab center near Niagara Falls, N.Y., pleaded guilty on charges of sexually attacking patients under their care! Candace A. Seelbinder (upper left) was charged with raping a patient in her care in 2016, and still faces criminal charges that could see her listed as a sex offender. She made a felony plea in the case filed by her former employers, allowing the disgraced healthcare worker to avoid jail time.
“I failed as a professional,” Seelbinder (pictured) told Niagara County Judge Matthew J. Murphy, III, while admitting to third-degree rape in the case. Patients in substance-abuse facilities are considered unable to legally consent to sex, according to New York State law. In December, Seelbinder’s co-worker Jessica Griffin, a rehab counselor, pled guilty to misdemeanor attempted rape in charges related to the case, agreeing to six years on probation.

The original charges filed by Northpointe Council, owners of the First Step Chemical Dependency Crisis Center, claimed that Seelbinder and Griffin (pictured) let the patients use drugs, drink alcoholic beverages, leave the facility, and use phones and computers in violation of the building’s rules. Those charges were in addition to their engaging in sexual acts with three patients at the facility over the course of three weeks — beginning in Feb. 2016.

Officials said that Seelbinder was offered only a felony plea — rather than Griffin’s misdemeanor option — because there were two men allegedly involved in her case. Seelbinder’s defense attorney, Brian J. Hutchison, still noted that the mother of four had admitted only to sleeping with one patient.
