"If he was gay or even bisexual," said the law enforcement source, "we have some people saying that would make it easier for Mateen to be radicalized. We already know that he grew up with an Islamic extremist father who's expressed support for the Taliban. The FBI had him on a watch list, and Mateen went to the same mosque in Florida as [Syrian suicide bomber] Moner Mohammad Abusalha."

The source added that the FBI had taken Mateen off the watch list that would have notified authorities when he purchased the firearms later used in the Orlando massacre. "Investigators want to know more about Mateen being in Pulse before the shootings, too," the insider said, "and if he was casing the club for the best ways to maximize his kill. That's useful information. Anything about his sex life is just material for the psych files!"
