Hugh Hefner ruled over a sexy wonderland at the Playboy Mansion — but the magazine founder spent his final days becoming as frail as his historic home!

Insiders realized how bad things had gotten when Hef skippped 2016's annual “Midsummer Night’s Dream” party at the Playboy Mansion — as disappointed executives saw Hef's son Cooper (pictured) serve as the face of the magazine. "He used to swear that he'd outlive us all," a Playboy pal said at the time, "but Hef hasn't been the same since since he became a tenant in his own home!"

The notorious Playboy Mansion was sold in August 2016 for $100 million, on the condition that Hefner could live there until his death. But the residence was already more like a rundown retirement home — with visitors more likely to bump into nurses than luscious naked women!

Sources revealed to The ENQUIRER in Nov. 2015 that Hefner's legendary home had already turned into a decrepit mess that rivaled its owner's sad state! Just days after Hef’s famous skin magazine announced it will no longer print explicit nude photos, beautiful Playmate Carla Howe revealed what life was really like at the 22-bedroom estate in Holmby Hills, Calif.

The estate where A-list celebs including
Leonardo DiCaprio,
Jack Nicholson, and
Colin Farrell once ran wild was smelling of decay, dog urine, mildew and moldering mattresses, visitors said. Carla added that Hef had grown more reclusive, and wanders the halls accompanied by his medical staff instead of buxom beauties!

Amazingly, the mansion was no longer a “place of excess with orgies and topless girls,” said Carla — seen here with her twin Melissa. But it was a different story back in the day!

Hef’s former No. 1 Girlfriend, Holly Madison (pictured), claimed the Playboy honcho offered her a Quaalude as a “thigh opener” the first night she met him at a club. Holly, who lived at the mansion from 2001 through 2008, said she had sex with the swinger the first time she was summoned to his bedroom — along with six other gals!

Dinner was served promptly at 6:30 every night, said Carla — with the occupants of the house joining fragile Hefner in eating beef and parsley sauce, which she said tastes “like hospital food.” After dinner, Hefner (seen here with
his wife Crystal) mostly wanted "to play chess with his friends and watch old films," she added.

The raven-haired beauty added the home looked worn out, with old phones hanging on the walls, and damp smelling bedrooms that feel “cold and unused.” Her claims backed up tales by former resident and Playmate Izabella St. James (pictured), who said the life of a Playboy model was far from glamorous.

“Each bedroom had mismatched, random pieces of furniture,” she recalled. “It was as if someone had gone to a charity shop and bought the basics for each room. Although we all did our best to decorate our rooms and make them homey, the mattresses on our beds were disgusting — old, worn and stained. The sheets were past their best, too.”

Izabella recalled how Leo and Colin could “click their fingers” to take their pick of girls at the house. “These boys caused a stir at every party,” she said. “Leo practically lived at the mansion! I lost count of the times I saw him bundling five or six girls into a limo to take back to his house.” But those times are long gone!

There were still beautiful women living at the house, said Carla — but they had a strict 9 p.m. curfew, and men are banned from the mansion. It’s “like being in prison,” the model noted, adding that Hefner wouldn't “change anything, and the whole place feels like it’s stuck in the 1980s!”
