Mad Max himself, Mel Gibson, will return to the screen as an actor for the first time since 2002.  After his drunken antisemitic remarks in July 2005, the 52 year-old Gibson has laid low.

Gibson has been inked to star in a new police thriller Edge of Darkness based on a BBC TV series, Daily Variety reported.  Shooting begins in August in Boston for director Martin Campbell.

Despite his absence from acting, Gibson was busy directing   – The Passion of the Christ (2004) and Apocalypto (2006).

In 2006, Gibson was busted by Malibu cops for drunk driving.  He then launched into an antisemitic tirade claiming Jews “were responsible for all the wars in the world”. 

Gibson repeatedly apologized and promptly went into rehab.

Gibson is currently serving a three-year probation sentence.
