JOHN EDWARDS has just surrendered to authorities at a courthouse in Winston-Salem after an arrest warrant was issued following his indictment on criminal charges by the Justice Department.

Edwards, 57, arrived at the federal courthouse with his daughter Cate for an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Patrick Auld.

Federal officials say he is “in custody”.

Prosecutors said the spending was illegal because the disgraced two-time presidential nominee should have reported it on public campaign finance filings and it exceeded the $2,300 limit per person for campaign contributions.

Edwards entered a “Not Guilty” plea and made a brief address to media following the arraignment.

"There's no question I have done wrong," he stated but claimed "I did not break the law."

Reportedly, one of the conditions prosecutors set down was to avoid contact with 100 year old heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon and not leave the country, surrendering his passport.  In court, Edwards was asked if he understood the severity of the indictment.

He replied, "I understand the charges. I AM a lawyer."

Edwards is reluctant to cut a plea deal with feds because he wants to retain his law license which he would lose if convicted.
