Mel Gibson‘s new film Apocalypto debuted as the No. 1 weekend movie despite the scandal following Gibson’s anti-Semitic rant and drunk driving arrest over the summer. Apocalypto, a movie about the Mayan civilization and told in an obscure Mayan language, opened with $14.2 million. Apocalypto beat out The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet.
