Jerry Lewis hosted his annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon over the Labor Day weekend, raising $1 million more than last year’s event — bringing the total to $56.8 million.
Lewis issued a statement after the 21 ½ hour telethon saying, “The extraordinary compassion of the great American public never ceases to amaze me, even after all these years.”
“Their message is unmistakable. They’re telling us to keep the research going at full speed and beat these devastating diseases.”
Lewis has said that he will continue to broadcast the live telethon every Labor Day until a cure is found.
