"Get Smart" star Anne Hathaway’s family was so worried about the shady business dealings of her boyfriend Raffaello Follieri that they hired a private investigator to look into his past.

That’s the untold story behind the surprising breakup of the glamorous couple, who had been together for four years.

In many ways, the split is a “Romeo and Juliet” story, said a source close to Anne.

The 25-year-old actress still loves Raffaello -- who was arrested on June 24 charges of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering -- but she ended the relationship because of her disapproving family, according to the source.

Those close to Anne were concerned that her association with the suave Italian could damage her rising career.

“Her business people have never liked Raffaello. It only makes sense that they would want the best for her,” said the source.
