When Christine Francisco’s devoutly religious, loving husband Nicholas suddenly disappeared last year, she was convinced he’d been murdered.
“He’d never abandon his family under any circumstances. There must be foul play,” she told investigators.
Police launched a massive search of the area near the couple’s home in SeaTac, Wash., including the banks and waters of the nearby Green River, but Nicholas had seemingly vanished without a trace.
The bizarre tale began Feb. 13, 2008, when Nicholas, 29, was seen leaving his job at an advertising agency. He told co-workers he was headed home to make cookies with his kids. At the time, Christine was expecting their third child.
Nicholas never made it home.
A few days later, his red 1992 Toyota was found abandoned in a parking lot.
“It was like he vanished into thin air,” said Detective Jon Holland of the King County, Wash., Sheriff ’s Office.
Nicholas’ disappearance sparked widespread Internet speculation.
“I have been flabbergasted by the amount of people across the country who have taken an interest in this case,” said sheriff ’s spokesman John Urquhart.
Some speculated that Nicholas had been killed or fallen into the Green River.
Some even called investigators with information from psychics on where to search next. But others suggested Nicholas was leading a double life or had planned his own disappearance.
They were right.
