Pretty boy cowlicked Zac Efron to play Jonny Quest in live-action re-do but flick won’t be called Jonny Quest!
WTF? What’s the point?
Well, since Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson seems to be in the offing for muscular mentor Race Bannon and Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) is rumored to play Indian pal Hadji in a reimagining of classic Hanna-Barbera toon, producers don’t want to be pigeon holed into something it isn’t.
Like doing it straight — Jonny is 11 years old in the original not 21. The animated classic was a cross between exotic Terry and the Pirates action/fantasy mixed with 1960s James Bond gimmickry.
It’s a move calculated by Team Efron to move away from dancing tween flicks that made him a semi-star to young girls which is why he ankled the Footloose remake.
They want to repackage Zac into an action star like hand-damaged Shia LaBeouf and not be stuck with a Scooby- Doo scenario of day-glo homo-eroticism.
If producers really had the guts they’d just jettison the whole concept and go with a live-action Venture Brothers where Zac’s lack of acting chops would make sense playing both dysfunctional super-science cloned sibs.
