Who’s afraid of the Holy See? That’s the question perplexing Tom Hanks and Ron Howard as they suddenly find themselves on the top of the Vatican’s diss list.

The Catholic Church, according to Avvenire, the Vatican’s official newspaper, quotes high ranking officials claiming they can "not approve" of The Da Vinci Code prequel, Angels & Demons.

The statement has Hollywood pundits scrambling as they fear the Vatican, the seat of worldwide power in the Catholic Church, may call for a boycott. The Vatican denied filmmakers permits to shoot in the heart of Vatican City for a key suspense sequence.

Meanwhile Archbishop Velasio De Paolis is against another boycott. According to Turin’s La Strampa,  a  "boomerang" effect would draw even more moviegoers to see the flick.
