West End and Bimini MP Obie Wilchombe told The Bahamas Tribune today he is aware of at least one attempt at extortion involving The Travoltas in connection with Jett’s death.
Former tourism minister and Travolta family friend, Wilchomie stated he was informed of the blackmail attempt by a trusted source and immediately alerted the Travolta family.
The reported blackmail attempt is believed to involve "an individual – reportedly a health care worker – trying to sell sensitive information or photos to international media agencies."
Earlier it was reported two individuals – allegedly one was a politician – were involved in the seamy scheme.
Wilchomie then called the alleged blackmailer "despicable, criminal and unacceptable" adding he would welcome any legal action by the Travoltas.
Jett Travolta, 16, died January 2nd after being found unconscious in the bathroom at the family home in Grand Bahama. Official cause of death was listed as "seizure".
Police in Grand Bahama and New Providence say they have not received any official complaint regarding extortion.
11/21/09 22:00 LATEST: According to multiple sources, what the blackmailers were trying to extort from Travolta was payment to suppress a photo of Jett in the ambulance as he lay dying. It is believed the pic in question was snapped by a EMT worker.
