Now, an ENQUIRER investigation can reveal the tragic extent of her emotional turmoil and downfall.
“Demi hit the self-destruct button a couple of years ago – and she’s been on a tear ever since,” confided a source close to the actress, who will turn 50 on Nov. 11.
According to the source, Demi sobbed: “I hate being old,” at the beginning of this year before starting a downhill spiral.
It didn’t end until she suffered a drug-induced seizure brought on by inhaling nitrous oxide from metal canisters known as “whip-its” and smoking “Spice” (a marijuana like herb) and was transported to a suburban Los Angeles hospital in late January.
This past year was brutal for Demi.
In November, she announced her split from “Two and a Half Men” actor Ashton Kutcher following revelations that he’d had a one-night stand with a 23-year-old blonde on his and Demi’s sixth wedding anniversary in September.
Still distraught over the affair, Demi hit rock bottom just weeks later when her good friend and former Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor Pattsy Rugg died.
At that point, friends were terrified that Demi – who’d been through rehab for cocaine and alcohol addiction when she was in her early 20s – might return to her old habits. And that’s exactly what happened.
“She was popping prescription pills and drinking,” the source revealed.
“Demi felt old, overweight and unappealing to Ashton, who at 33 looked and behaved more like her son than her husband.
“So she’d drink cans of caffeine-laced Red Bull and take the ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) drug Adderall to keep her weight down. It was a potentially lethal combination.
“And things only got worse…”
Weeks before her drug-induced collapse, Demi was “raging like a madwoman” at nightclubs with daughter Rumer, 23, and hitting on men nearly half her age.
“Demi has been partying like an out-of-control teenager with Rumer and her young friends,” continued the insider.
“She’s been acting more like Rumer’s wild sister than her mother.”
