"Martha comes across as a pathetic loser at love in the book, and she's livid at Mariana for writing it," said a publishing source.

The women's 20-year friendship ended when Mariana gave testimony that helped put Martha, 68, behind bars in an insider stock trading scandal.

Mariana writes that after Martha's 1990 divorce from her husband Andy, Martha decided to find a new husband - and above all else, he had to be very rich.

An obsessed Martha actually stalked one wealthy man the two women dubbed "The Mogul."

Mariana writes that after a seductive summer date in the Hamptons, Martha called her friends to say that she'd found her next husband.

But "the mogul" rejected her and refused to take her phone calls, which only fueled her desperation. Mariana writes that Martha, with her in tow, began stalking his East Hampton home weekend after weekend.
