RANDY TRAVIS is hospitalized in critical condition with a viral heart infection, his publicist confirmed.

Travis, 54, was rushed to an unidentified Texas hospital on Sunday because of complications related to his "recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy," Travis spokesman Kirt Webster said

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention viral cardiomyopathy is a disorder where a virus attacks the muscles of the heart, causing the heart to beat slower, often causing the heart to stop.

"Viral cardiomyopathy can be caused by 30-plus different viruses, but it's almost impossible to pinpoint which virus it is,"  Dr. Ramin Oskoui, a cardiologist and internal medicine specialist in Washington told CNN.

As The ENQUIRER reported previously things have been kinda rocky for Randy, 54, including arrests for assault and public intoxication.

Despite reports Randy has NOT has heart surgery, his rep told The ENQUIRER.
