POLICE SHOOT DISCOVERY CHANNEL MAD MAN

Police shot and killed a crazed gunman after he held employees hostage at the headquarters of the Discovery Channel in Silver Spring, Maryland. All the hostages were unharmed.

The suspect, identified as James Jay Lee or James Jae Lee, 43, is an environmental activist who has protested in front of the building before. He wanted Discovery — owner of TLC, Animal Planet, Science Channel and Planet Green networks — to change their programming to help save the planet.

Montgomery County police spent about three hours negotiating with Lee after he burst into the suburban Washington building about 1 p.m. waving a handgun and with canisters strapped to his body.

Previously, Lee was sentenced to six months of supervised probation for disorderly conduct after creating a stir outside the Discovery building.
