No charges will be filed against Michael Phelps. That’s the word from South Carolina’s Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott who decided not to prosecute the Olympian for smoking pot while at a college party in November.
The 14-time gold medalist “is not immune from his responsibilities to do what is right,” the sheriff added. “He is also human and can make a mistake.”
“Michael Phelps and I agree that something positive needs to come from this incident and that is a message of not using drugs,” Lott said in a statement.
Michael released a statement saying, “I’m glad this matter is put to rest. But there are also some important lessons that I’ve learned. For me, it’s all about recognizing that I used bad judgment and it’s a mistake I won’t make again.”
Phelps was suspended for by USA Swimming for three months and lost his endorsement deal with Kellogg Co.
