Graves died of an apparent heart attack outside his Pacific Palisades home, about a week shy of his 84th birthday, after returning from brunch with his family. He collapsed on the driveway before he could reach his house, his publicist said. One of his daughters administered CPR but was unable to revive him.
Graves starred in more than 70 television series and feature films, including Stalag 17, Killers from Space and Beginning of the End. He won a Golden Globe in 1971 for his role in Mission: Impossible.
Graves was born Peter Aurness in 1926 in Minneapolis. His older brother, James Arness, starred in Gunsmoke. Graves adopted his grandfather's last name to avoid confusion with his brother.
Graves is survived by his wife, three daughters and six grandchildren.
