MAMMA MARIAH

Finally! Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon are going to have a baby.

For months, the two have been squabbling over when to start a family and butting heads over Mariah’s drinking binges and intense work schedule. But now the multi-talented entertainer and her TV host husband of nearly two years are busily trying to conceive.

And if nature doesn’t play its role in two months’ time, the determined pair plan to adopt, say sources.

"Mariah and Nick are thrilled at the prospect of finally starting a family together," an insider told The ENQUIRER.

"Mariah feels incredibly blessed to have a solid marriage and a soaring career – but now her primary goal is motherhood."

Mariah, 40, and 29-year-old Nick have made it their joint New Year’s resolution to have a baby in 2010.

"If they don’t conceive naturally, then Mariah and Nick are ready to adopt," disclosed the insider. "They have lined up several potential adoption agencies.

"They’ve also looked at baby profiles online, and Mariah is completely enamored of two mixed-raced baby girls and one cute-as-a-button boy as adoption possibilities."

The couple – who tied the knot in a surprise April 2008 wedding – have endured a series of family-planning setbacks.

As The ENQUIRER exclusively reported, the Grammy-winning performer suffered a devastating miscarriage scare last summer, and in early 2009 the couple visited an in vitro clinic.

When asked last October whether she was ready for children, Mariah emphatically told an interviewer: "We definitely want a family."

But during an intense few months of jointly promoting the release of her latest album and her award-winning film Precious, the 5-foot-9 singer swelled to a shocking 177 pounds, as The ENQUIRER disclosed.

"Mariah was stressed over work demands and upsetabout her inability to conceive," said the insider. "She was worried she was letting Nick down.

"Mariah turned to drinking and high-calorie late-night snacks for comfort and ended up ballooning to her heaviest weight ever.

"But she has recommitted herself to healthy living."

After a tipsy acceptance speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in early January, the reformed beauty went easy on the champagne while celebrating at the Jan. 18 Golden Globe ceremonies.

"Mariah would love to experience pregnancy, but she and Nick aren’t hung up on having a biological child," said the insider. "All that really matters to them is that they begin building a family and start sharing in the joys of parenthood as soon as possible."
