Los Angeles police may investigate the bombshell JUSTIN BIEBER  sex scandal, The ENQUIRER has learned.

Los Angeles police commander Andrew Smith said his department may investigate the alleged sexual tryst between an underage Justin Bieber and a now 20-year-old woman because it violated California's statutory rape law.

Cmdr. Smith said no report had been previously taken about the now notorious October 2010 incident at Staples Center.

But now that the lawsuit has exploded all over the media law enforcement may conduct an investigation into the stunning allegations after RadarOnline.com first reported Mariah Yeater had filed a paternity suit earlier this week against Bieber.

According to the legal docs, Yeater had just turned 19 when she claimed that she and Bieber, then 16, had a sexual encounter after one of his concerts.

Bieber's reps have denied he is the father of Yeater's baby boy.

Under the State of California penal code, anyone who has unlawful sex with a minor and  is not more than three years older is guilty of a misdemeanor.

If found guilty,  the sex crime carries a one-year jail sentence.
