The Little House on the Prairie child star’s new tell-all Prairie Tale recounts how her life disintegrated after starring on the long-running series with TV dada Michael Landon!
By the time "Half Pint" was 20 she had 3 nose jobs, booze drive affairs and an unplanned pregnancy with Rob Lowe!
Despite playing the cherubic Laura Ingalls, Melissa learned about vodka from TV dada Landon.
"As a kid, I didn’t know he sipped vodka from his coffee mug," Gilbert revealed, "But I’m sure he’s one reason why, as a young adult, I almost always picked men who smelled like alcohol."
At 17 she fell hard for Lowe, the one time Brat Pack party animal and began living la vida loca. After Rob proposed, she discovered she was pregnant with Rob’s child but after a miscarriage the affair went sour.
"I had lost my baby and my relationship with Rob … and it hurt like hell," she writes.
After an alcohol fueled, tempestuous relationship with actor Bo Brinkman with whom she had a son, Dakota, the couple divorced after he cheated on Gilbert
Now married to fellow thesp Bruce Boxleitner (Scarecrow & Mrs. King), Melissa been sober for five years and continues to work in TV and served as president of Screen Actor’s Guild.
Beloved by her many fans Melissa receives letters from women who’s own tortured lives forced them to seek solace by viewing Prairie, wishing their lives were like the idyllic world of Laura Ingalls.
"What I don’t ever tell them is that I’m also among those who wish I had Laura’s life the way I played her," Melissa confessed.
