KENNEDY DEATHBED PROMISE

Rape scandal ridden WILLIAM KENNEDY SMITH fulfilled a deathbed promise to his beloved uncle TED KENNEDY when he recently got engaged to his longtime girlfriend.

The infamous Kennedy cousin - whose 1991 trial for rape in ritzy Palm Beach, Fla., rocked the Kennedy family - proposed to his 32-year-old sweetheart, Anne Henry, who works in the arts in Washington, D.C., in mid-December. Smith is now 50 and a physician.

The couple is planning an April wedding.

"Willie nearly destroyed Ted's political career by involving him in the rape scandal," said a family insider.

"Before Ted died, Willie spent time with him at the family compound in Hyannis Port.

"A tearful Willie promised his uncle he'd finally settle down and not bring any further shame to the Kennedy name.

"Teddy went to his grave believing that."
