‘Mary Poppins’ turned Julie Andrews into a major film star — but the beloved musical nearly the killed British entertainer!
In addition to singing and dancing in her 1964 movie debut, Julie also performed her own stunts, a risky move that almost claimed her life!
“There was a very dangerous day right at the end of filming when I was in this excruciatingly painful harness,” she recalled.
Julie, now 81, was airborne and holding the title character’s iconic umbrella when she felt a wire that supported her drop.
Julie suddenly “plummeted to the stage” in a terrifying moment.
“There was an awful silence . . . and I did let fly with a few Anglo-Saxon four-letter words,” admits Julie, who fortunately escaped serious injury.
