In a desperate attempt to make fans forget his numerous gay scandals, JOHN TRAVOLTA agreed to co-star in KIRSTIE ALLEY’s new sitcom, an insider says.

The 59-year-old married father of two – who rocketed to fame on the classic sitcom “Welcome Back, Kotter” – hopes that when he returns to his comedy roots, fans will be distracted from the lawsuits and sordid stories that have plagued him.

“John wants to win back the hearts of his longtime fans with comedy,” revealed a pal.

“He’s hoping that by playing a macho guy who beds Kirstie’s character he’ll be able to put some of his scandals behind him.”

On “Kirstie” – which debuts Dec. 4 on TV Land – Alley plays Madison Banks, a Broadway star whose life is upended when the son she gave up at birth (Eric Petersen) comes back into her life. Travolta plays a stagehand on Madison’s Broadway show who continues to pester her after a one-night stand.

The source says the handsome actor believes that by reteaming with his “Look Who’s Talking” and “Look Who’s Talking Too” co-star, he’ll be able to reclaim his leading man image.

But it will be no easy task.

Last August, The ENQUIRER broke the story about Doug Gotterba, Travolta’s former pilot, who said he was the star’s lover for six years in the 1980s.

Travolta was also rocked by lawsuits from male masseurs who charged the actor with inappropriate behavior, and The ENQUIRER interviewed John’s former personal assistant Joan Edwards, who said she worked for him from 1978 to 1994 and said: “Of course I knew he was gay.”
