“Woody’s biggest passion in life is helping destitute and penniless people,” said a friend of the 50-year-old actor.
“If he comes across someone who’s down-and-out on the street, he’ll hand them every dollar he has in his pocket.”
The Emmy-winning star’s compassion for those without a home dates back to his childhood, said the source.
“Woody was in elementary school the first time he saw a homeless person,” the friend revealed. “Every time he saw someone who was homeless after that, he’d ask his mom for money to give them.”
The “White Men Can’t Jump” star showed just how generous he can be while leaving actress Carol Kane’s 60th birthday party at Bar Centrale in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood on June 17. Harrelson handed a homeless woman all the money in his pocket – a grand total of $600!
The woman was reportedly so thrilled that she yelled: “Woody! White men CAN jump!”
Harrelson is also active in UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) and environmental awareness causes, and he’s an out-spoken supporter for legalizing marijuana.
A father of three daughters with wife Laura Louie, Woody has headlined many charity events for the homeless since the late ’80s, helping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the cause.
“Woody has a huge heart and dedicates his time and money to many charities,” said the source. “But the homeless are the most near and dear to him.”
