HEIGL BABY HEALTH CRISIS

Katherine Heigl‘s new baby from Korea heart-condition shocker!

Years of playing Dr. Izzie Stevens on the ABC hit Grey’s Anatomy did little to prepare Katherine Heigl for a terrifying medical crisis involving her newly adopted 10-month-old baby girl from Korea.

The actress, 30, "broke down" when she learned her baby girl had a life-threatening heart condition.

The baby, whom Katherine and husband Josh Kelley have named Nancy LeighNaleigh for short – underwent surgery at just 2 months of age to repair a hole in her heart that she was born with.

"Doctors said the congenital heart defect had to be treated quickly to save the baby’s life," a friend told The ENQUIRER.

Katherine and Josh, 29, had to wait eight more months before they could bring her home in September.

"When they received the devastating news – it broke Katherine’s heart," said the friend. "She and Josh were terrified at first, but they prayed about it and realized that it was meant to be – it made them love Naleigh even more."

The new parents are doing everything possible to help their daughter through the health ordeal, say pals.

Dr. Richard Stein, a New York-based cardiologist and spokesperson for the American Heart Association, did not treat Naleigh, but says the baby most likely needed treatment "because it was life-threatening, and the doctors thought that the hole was too large to close on its own."

Dr. Stein also says that failing to correct the condition could have led to developmental damage or even death.
