A year after LIZ TAYLOR passed, a devastating dogfight has erupted over her pet pooch, Daisy.

Friends say Liz’s son, Christopher Wilding, 57, immediately took custody of the pampered Maltese, which was frequently photographed perched on the star’s lap.

But her former beau and manager Jason Winters desperately wants Daisy for himself.

“It was chaos after Liz died last March, and Chris took Daisy home to live with him,” a longtime family friend told The ENQUIRER.

“But Jason coveted that dog and felt it would connect him to Liz. He was devastated when he didn’t get her – but he hasn’t given up hope.

“Jason pleads with Chris by phone to let him have Daisy. He points out he’d give the dog a wonderful place to live at his opulent homes in Palm Springs and Hawaii.

“He told a pal, ‘I know Elizabeth would have wanted that dog with me, I know it! Chris doesn’t love Daisy the way I do. I would do anything to have that dog back!’”

But as far as Chris is concerned, Jason is barking up the wrong tree. “Chris feels Daisy is the last link to his mother, and he was the closest to her out of her four kids,” explained the friend.

The screen great’s love for dogs began when she was a child in Kent, England, and had a tail-wagger named Monty.

In Liz’s later years, a white Maltese named Sugar became her constant companion from the time she was a puppy until her death at age 12 in 2005. Liz then fell in love with Daisy, who was descended from Sugar.

“I sometimes think I prefer animals to people,” Hollywood’s Queen of Glamour once said. “And I was lucky. My first leading men were dogs and horses.”

While Jason knows he has no legal right to Daisy, he still pines for her.

“It’s sad,” said the friend. “Both men are still grief-stricken over Liz’s death. And they both want to cling to a cute little Maltese to help ease the pain.”
