'Good Morning America' star SAM CHAMPION is leaving ABC News to join the Weather Channel.

In what's being called "a once in a lifetime opportunity," Champion will become the on-air face of the Weather Channel, appearing as a host and serving as managing editor.

Champion tweeted Monday, "Only an amazing opportunity like this at @weatherchannel cld take me away from my @ABC family of 25 yrs and @GMA #blessedlife."

He added, "Thank YOU for all the love and tweets! I promise i will read each one. #itsAmazingOutThere !

The morning show personality will end his run with ABC with a farewell celebration on Wednesday.

A statement from the network announced, "While there is no replacing Sam, we are in excellent hands with his storm chasing partner of the last few years, meteorologist GINGER ZEE, who will take over his weather responsibilities at 'GMA' and across ABC News. As you know, Ginger always rushes straight toward the eye of any storm and weaves cutting-edge science with human emotion to elevate our coverage."
