JAMES BROLIN has broken the heart of his 89-year-old former “Marcus Welby, M.D.” co-star ELENA VERDUGO – ignoring pleas for him to visit before she breathes her last, sources tell The National ENQUIRER.

The nursing home-bound Elena, who played feisty aide Consuelo Lopez on the popular 1970s TV show, is crying to her friends that Barbra Streisand’s 73-year-old hubby hasn’t stopped by to say his final good-byes.

The devastated actress recently told a pal: “I love Jimmy like a son, but he doesn’t seem interested in visiting me.”

Added a friend: “It’s sad. It’s like James has turned his back on her.

“He can’t seem to find the time to spend an hour with the woman who once thought of herself as his adopted mom.

“For Elena, who is counting down her days, a visit from her former close friend James would be a real pick-me-up. But he doesn’t seem to care – even though she’s had friends reach out to him.

“Elena made James promise that if she were to age ‘ungracefully,’ he would help her.

“She’s brokenhearted and that’s what hurts her the most: James went back on his promise to her.”

The two-time Emmy nominee has been living out her final days in a facility in North Hollywood.

And while James – who played Dr. Steven Kiley – doesn’t seem to make “house calls,” the show’s late star Robert Young checked in with Elena regularly, said her friend.

“The show lasted seven years – and the cast became like family.”
