Japanese law enforcement is investigating death threats against Ambassador CAROLINE KENNEDY.

Caroline, who was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Japan by President Obama, was reportedly marked for death by an extremist.

According to the reports, death threats were sent via phone to the U.S. Embassy. The calls targeted Caroline and another envoy, Alfred Magleby, the U.S. consul general who is based on Okinawa, a police official confirmed.

There are 25,000 U.S. troop stationed in Okinawa – about half of the American military presence located in Japan. Many Okinawans view the U.S. troops as an “occupational” force — a hold over from the defeat of Japan in World War 2 in 1945, U.S. Today reported

According to local media, the threats were phoned in from an English-speaking caller.

Police are probing the case based on suspicions of a blackmailing attempt.

The police reports emerged on the same day First Lady Michelle Obama arrived in Japan to kick off a trip to Asia to promote education for women.

Earlier, this month an-anti-American activist knifed the U.S. ambassador to South Korea in Seoul. The attack prompted heightened security for U.S. diplomatic corps throughout Asia.

Tokyo police and the U.S. Embassy declined to comment to international media on these reports.
