The man who guided STEVE McQUEEN‘s super-charged wild Mustang chase through the streets of San Francisco, director PETER YATES has died at 81.

Yates who”s eclectic output in cinema included seminal biking film Breaking Away died in London after an undisclosed illness, his agent confirmed.

Yates was nominated for 4 Oscars – two as director and two as producer for Breaking Away and backstage soaper The Dresser.

Among his films of note were Murphy’s War with Peter O’Toole, the crime drama The Friend of Eddie Coyle with Robert Mitchum as a Beantown hitman, The Hot Rock,a caper flick with Robert Redford and George Segal, Eyewtiness and the fantasy flop Krull.

Yates started in UK TV helming several eps of Secret Agent which starred Patrick McGoohan as Agent John Drake and The Saint which toplined future Bond Roger Moore as PI Simon Templar.
