Jennifer Lopez’s dreams of motherhood have been shattered again. Filled with hope after getting a positive result on a home pregnancy test, the 37-year-old singeractress rushed to the doctor to confirm the finding with an officebased blood-serum pregnancy test.
Jennifer, who’s been desperate to have a baby with hubby Marc Anthony, 37, was crushed when the office test showed she was not pregnant.
“She’s wanted to have a child for nearly 10 years,” a source told The ENQUIRER. “But her hopes for a baby died in the doctor’s office. Now she’s back at square one.”
“And this failure to conceive hit J.Lo particularly hard because she has been through so much to get pregnant.”
In our June 26 issue, The ENQUIRER revealed that Jennifer had secret fertility surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, in which a laparoscope was inserted into her abdomen to look at her ovaries, fallopian tubes and other organs for adhesions or possible malformations.
Doctors injected a dye into Jennifer’s fallopian tubes, where a blockage was discovered. The pressure of the dye injection opened the blockage. She was also put on the fertility drug Clomid to boost her production of eggs.
“They said it was just a matter of making love at the right times, watching, waiting and keeping her fingers crossed,” continued the source. “That’s why J.Lo was so ready to believe the positive finding on the home test.”
Although both urine and blood tests measure the presence of a pregnancy hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the blood test is more accurate and can measure the amount of hCG present. Experts say the home tests occasionally give false positive readings.
Jennifer’s latest disappointment is another blow in her long-running quest for motherhood. She has been trying to conceive since her first marriage to Ojani Noa in 1997.
“When she married Marc, she had high hopes for conceiving a baby,” said the source. “Marc has proven himself to be a champion at baby-making, having fathered three children by an ex-girlfriend and a former wife.”
“But after two years of marriage to Marc with no baby in sight, Jennifer was becoming desperate – and she knew her biological clock was ticking. She even flirted with the idea of adoption, before turning to the fertility surgery.”
“Her doctors will probably want her to stay on Clomid until December. If that doesn’t work, the next step could be artificial insemination with her husband’s sperm, and then in vitro fertilization.”
Although J.Lo’s publicist denied that she had a false positive home pregnancy test, the source insisted: “J.Lo was devastated, but she’s far from giving up on her dream of having a child.”
