OPRAH PLAYS CUPID TO TOM AND KATIE

Multi-talented Oprah Winfrey has taken on a new role — playing Cupid to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. “You’re gone!” she kept cooing as the 42-year-old hunk swooned over his 26- year-old actress girlfriend on the daytime queen’s Monday show (May 23).

Then she fired a final quiver at Tom’s heart: “You know Katie once told Seventeen magazine that her dream was to marry Tom Cruise. And I’ve been in the dream-making business this year. Are you in the dream making business?”

Coy Tom blushed as he responded: “I don’t want to disappoint her. This is something I have to discuss with her personally.”

The megastar added: “I’ve spoken with her parents.”

Oprah continued to probe: “You’ve never had this kind of feeling before. Right?”

“No, I haven’t,” the Oscar nominee admitted. “I’m not going to pretend.”

Tom was previously married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two adopted children.

And Oprah played her Cupid role to the max just the weekend before when Cruise and Holmes — dressed to observers’ eyes like a bride and groom — were the beau and belle of the ball at her tribute to pioneering black women in Santa Barbara, Calif. They danced the night away, kissing openly on the dance floor. In their suite there was a framed photo of themselves.

On the show Tom revealed to Oprah how the couple’s whirlwind romance began and what it is about the Dawson’s Creek beauty that made him fall madly in love.

“The best sex is in a serious relationship. It’s the intimacy. That’s when it works. I don’t play games. I’m not a one night stand kind of guy.”

Moments later the 300 audience members rose to their feet as Tom spontaneously ran from the stage to bring Katie out to join him on set. The lovers were first photographed together in Rome last month. And only a week ago, The National Enquirer reported that Katie could become the next Mrs. Cruise.

Both stars have summer films opening next month. Tom headlines Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds and Katie stars in Batman Begins. –Additional reporting by Rebecca Mowling
