A terrified Burt Reynolds was rushed to the hospital for emergency, lifesaving heart surgery that left him in such agony he pleaded for additional painkillers.

The 74-year-old screen legend was rocked by excruciating chest pains at his Florida mansion in mid-February, and was taken to the hospital – where tests showed he had five blocked arteries, The ENQUIRER learned.

"Burt was more scared than he’d ever been in his life," disclosed a friend.

The surgery left the star in severe pain, and Burt – who’d been in drug and alcohol rehab six months earlier – grew furious when the staff refused to give him the extra post-op drugs.

The behind-the-scenes drama played out as the star was recovering from grueling surgery at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, Florida which  specializes in heart surgery after being whisked there from his waterfront home.
